A very good story - rather a very good beginning of what promises to be a very good story. As I've voted above, the characterization, the voice and the interplay & dialogue between the children is remarkably vivid and rings true. Gordie reminds me very much of my own son and even myself as a child and with his mannerisms and his reactions to his environment, his responses to his parents and the way they treat him.

There were times when I was a bit confused about the descriptions. I was never entirely clear where or when the story was set and I felt that there a few non-sequiturs that I thought would develop but never did, namely Gordie's parents vs. Simon's and the gaggle of other kids who accompany them to the water tower. I had to back up and re-read through the delicious descriptions once or twice to be sure of what was happening and to whom.

The story moves elegantly from scene to scene, briskly, cleanly. And it's reflections back to a mature Gordie in the bathtub is very intriguing.

On the whole, a great effort, a very good story. I would definitely care to read the rest.

Congrats.
